 About StartingAClothingLine.com Co-Founder Michael Harper

Michael J. Harper was born and raised in Detroit, MI. His first entrepreneurial endeavor came in the third grade as he began drawing cartoon books and selling them to his classmates for 25 cents each. In the eighth grade, Michael was awarded a four-year scholarship to the University of Michigan, provided he maintained a 3.0 grade point average throughout high school. Michael then took his love for designing clothing even further when he entered Cass Technical High in Detroit. As a freshman, Michael designed a blue jean jacket. It was an instant fashion hit as Michael received numerous compliments whenever he wore it which led to Michael designing jackets for other classmates.

Michael went on to graduate on the honor roll from Cass which secured his four-year academic scholarship to the University of Michigan. Michael entered college the following Spring. In 1997, Michael graduated with distinction with a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts with focuses on Management, Psychology and Sociology from U of M. In 1999 he was inspired to start an Internet company after watching an episode of the Oprah Winfrey show which featured guests that had quit their jobs to go after their dreams.

Michael’s Internet idea would ultimately lead to him wanting to start his own clothing label. Michael then pitched his idea to longtime friend Jay Arrington who agreed to join in. The two first set out to read and learn everything that was available at the time about starting & designing a clothing line. There was not a lot of information available that went into the real-world issues of starting a line. Still armed with their vision and limited knowledge, they took out home equity loans, used their tax returns and convinced family and friends to invest to initially fund the clothing line.

Michael and Jay designed every aspect of their clothing collections for men and women with the focus on being unique yet still hot, a mixture their clientele loved! Some of their pieces were featured in magazines, music videos, television shows and worn by athletes, music stars and actors. Friends and family would always call Michael saying, “Hey I just saw your clothing on this show or in this movie.” At one point the line was sold in over 70 stores across the US and Japan. One season they took in over $70,000 in orders at the Magic Tradeshow in Las Vegas. Michael and Jay had also found the secret to getting manufacturers all over the world to make small quantities at a time when industry insiders said it couldn’t be done.

People from all over the country were always writing and calling Michael and Jay’s Office asking them to give them guidance on how they could start their own line. The two then decided to start “StartingAClothingLine.com” in November 2004 realizing that they could help people start and design their own clothing lines successfully. They realized that with the right information people would have a far better chance of making it in the fashion business.

Michael and Jay wrote a 3 book course on how to start a clothing line. They also created and released the Digital Fashion Pro Fashion Design System which creates professional fashion sketches that resemble lifelike garments along with a host of other fashion related products. Today “StartingAClothingLine.com” is a huge success with clients from around the world.

 About StartingAClothingLine.com Co-Founder Jay Arrington

Jay Arrington was born in Detroit, MI. where he was introduced to entrepreneurship by his parents who owned a family business. Jay’s first hands on experience as an entrepreneur happened at age twelve. He acquired old comic books from a neighborhood friend and sold them to his fellow classmates for 50 cents a book. The experience of dealing with customers at a young age opened Jay’s mind to the possibility of owning his own business. Also at age twelve Jay, being a talented illustrator, designed a unique teddy bear that caught the eye of a small investor, but unfortunately the deal fell through, sending Jay back to the drawing board. Jay stated, “That was a good experience for me; it exposed me to the reality of disappointments.”

Jay went on to enter the job market at the tender age of 15. He maintained a job throughout his high school years. After graduating high school, Jay opted not to go to college and he went further into the job market. He worked a total of 11 jobs before settling at Chrysler (now Daimler/Chrysler). At the age of 22, Jay was averaging $60,000 a year and he used that money to finance his entrepreneurial ambitions. Jay stated, “I wanted to dedicate my life to becoming a business owner and working for myself.” Jay started a host of businesses in search of the right one. With each business experience, he learned something of value to further aid him in developing as a business man and an entrepreneur.

Jay is an extensive book reader and he attributes a lot of his entrepreneurial strengths, confidence, and success to all the great entrepreneurs. Jay stated, “I read all the greats, Henry Ford, Andrew Carnegie, and John D. Rockefeller Sr. just to name a few. These gentlemen were non-lettered men and they accomplished great things, I somewhat patterned my life after them.” Jay Arrington is a true entrepreneur: he’s self-confident, hard working, and has a positive attitude.

He spent a number of years as a community volunteer where he gained praises from his family and friends and also from former Michigan Governor John Engler for his participation in the Amer-I-can program, an accomplishment he is very proud. Jay states, “Working with the Amer-I-can program gave me an opportunity to help people who really needed it and I was very proud to do it.”
Jay honors his friendship and partnership with Michael Harper. The two formed a partnership in 1999 and together passed the point of no return in business and never looked back. Jay stated, “Together I’m extremely confident that we can do anything. History will one day tell our story.” Jay Arrington has the heart of a champion and is a true entrepreneur. In 2007, Jay left Daimler-Chyrsler’s assembly plant to devote 100% of his attention to Harper-Arrington Media.
